What Happens to Ukrainian Children After Returning from Russian Occupation: A Voices of Children Analytical Study
Nearly 600,000 children living in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine attend schools that have been fully converted to the Russian education system (according to the Centre for Civic Education “Almenda”). Overall, as of October 2024, around 1.6 million Ukrainian children aged 0–18 remained in temporarily occupied territories. The Voices of Children Foundation conducted the analytical study “Returning Childhood: Psychological Support for Children on Their Path to Reintegration” to better understand what families face after returning from Russian occupation.
“I Feel Like I’m at Home Here”: How Voices of Children Psychologists Supported Children in April and May
"I feel so good here. It feels like home!" — this is how eight-year-old Aniuta described her sessions at the Voices of Children center in Kropyvnytskyi. Over the past two spring months, there have been many moments like this across our regional centers. Children learned how to cope with stress, while parents found opportunities to pause and take care of themselves.
“I’m Falling Apart Emotionally”: What Children and Parents Bring to Online Psychologists During Wartime
The Voices of Children Foundation’s online psychological support helpline receives requests every day from children and parents across Ukraine and abroad. Anxiety and sleep disorders, loss of appetite, self-harm, and burnout among mothers — chronic stress gradually wears down mental health. The first signs often appear through physical symptoms, leading families to seek help from pediatricians or gastroenterologists before realizing that the root cause may be psychological and emotional strain.
“Every Day Is Challenging, but the Challenges Are Worth It”: A Conversation About Fundraising and Ethical Communication
A papier-mâché airplane that helped raise UAH 1.6 million through a campaign launched by a child who received support from the Foundation. Nearly €900,000 raised by a Dutch journalist who first learned about our work through the media. Behind every psychological session for a child from Poltava lies a chain of efforts coming together. Someone has to find a partner willing to fund the work of a regional center. Someone else has to write the post that the partner will read and decide to support. And someone has to make sure that the child and their family learn that this support is available.
“Creativity Is a Sixth Breath”: Olha Mykytchyn and Olia Rusina on the Community Behind the Art Labs
The Voices of Children art labs are part of the Foundation’s psychosocial support program. During art residencies, teenagers work alongside the Foundation’s psychologists and mentors from various creative fields to write poetry and prose, make short films, create original theater productions, and take part in jam sessions. Here, creativity becomes a tool for reflection and resilience that stays with participants long after the residency ends.

I really enjoyed it, especially the work with the psychologist and the beautiful scenery. Everyone is so different—it’s great for socialization, and there were lots of emotions.

Children’s Camp
When you're in a like-minded environment, it energizes you. Thanks to this course, I realized even more that this is my calling, my true work. It gave me the hope I once desperately lacked and a strong push to keep going and not stop.
Sofia
Writing Course with Art Therapy Elements
I didn’t believe that 21 days of working with psychologists would change anything. But I was wrong. Here, they told me I was mistaken for keeping everything inside. You’re always afraid. You don’t allow yourself to cry in front of your children. But here—see? I’m speaking, and the tears are flowing. I deeply regret torturing myself and my children for so many months.
Victoria
Camp for Women with Severe War Experience
I remember how nervous I was. At the first meeting, we started crying: each of us felt exactly what my mother was trying to express, sharing her feelings. Later, we laughed more and more often, sharing funny moments of life with the children. We have created a safe environment here, and it is unique, and I am sincerely grateful for it!
