How the Idea Arose

The idea of creating the book of children’s quotes arose long before the large-scale invasion. Olha Vovk, Head of Creative Department of the Foundation, inspired by her younger sister Tania, started taking notes of witty children’s quotes.

As she started talking I wrote down her apt childlike outer-space words.

Thus at the Foundation #childrentalk heading has emerged and weekly interesting children’s quotes were published. When the large-scale war began the rubric was renamed into #warchildrentalk. Azad Safarov, co-founder of the “Voices of Children” suggested collecting children’s quotes into a book.
The publication became a testimony of the war from the perspective of children. Simultaneously the authors wanted to emphasize a childhood continuity despite atrocities of war.
The Book Structure
The “War Through the Voices of Children” is a Ukrainian-English book. The publication’s bilinguality has contributed to its distribution around the world.

The quotes are preceded by a letter from the child who has experienced the military occupation.
I am addressing all parents, grandparents, custodians and other people who influence children’s lives. Listen To Children! There is no greater happiness than being heard,
it says.
We decided to group children’s quotes into the following sections: “Feelings”, “Curiosity”, “Imagination”, “Discovery”, “Family”, “Nature”, “Games”, “Home”, “Trips”, “Dreams”.
Each statement is paired with an illustration. The children themselves, as well as designers, artists, photographers and famous people from around the world contributed to the creation of the images. This included illustrators Nikita Titov, Serhii Maidukov, Oleksandr Hrekhov, Iryna Vale, singer Jamala and her son Rahman, singer Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, and culinary expert Yevhen Klopotenko.
“War Through the Voices of Children” is being read worldwide
Immediately after the publication of the book “War Through the Voices of Children”, it was supported by the Federation of European Publishers. This campaign was only the beginning.

On March 1, 2023 the “Voices of Children” Charitable Foundation team presented the book at the OSCE headquarters, on April 27 at the European Parliament’s Cultural Committee meeting, on September 19 on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly and on October 3 at the Warsaw Security Forum.
The “War Through the Voices of Children” is presented on every occasion, namely: during an experience exchange in the UK, a meeting with 16 ombudsmen in Vienna and at the informal reception of foreign journalists at the foundation’s Kyiv Center.

The book has been available to buy in the US since October 2024. The copyright was acquired by HarperCollins Publishers, one of the “Big Five” English-language publishers. Part of the proceeds from the sale of each copy will be used to provide psychological assistance to Ukrainian children with war experiences.
