What Happens to Ukrainian Children After Returning from Russian Occupation: A Voices of Children Analytical Study
Nearly 600,000 children living in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine attend schools that have been fully converted to the Russian education system (according to the Centre for Civic Education “Almenda”). Overall, as of October 2024, around 1.6 million Ukrainian children aged 0–18 remained in temporarily occupied territories. The Voices of Children Foundation conducted the analytical study “Returning Childhood: Psychological Support for Children on Their Path to Reintegration” to better understand what families face after returning from Russian occupation.

“Creativity Is a Sixth Breath”: Olha Mykytchyn and Olia Rusina on the Community Behind the Art Labs
The Voices of Children art labs are part of the Foundation’s psychosocial support program. During art residencies, teenagers work alongside the Foundation’s psychologists and mentors from various creative fields to write poetry and prose, make short films, create original theater productions, and take part in jam sessions. Here, creativity becomes a tool for reflection and resilience that stays with participants long after the residency ends.

Voices Camp, Lord of the Elements, and a new camp for older teenagers still in the making. Children arrive at the Foundation’s camps with very different experiences: some have escaped occupied territories, some have loved ones serving in the military, and some have experienced loss.

Imagine a situation where a teenager wants to speak with a psychologist but cannot do so without parental consent. Sometimes parents are not available. Sometimes they do not support the decision, even when the child is actively asking for help. One such case is a personal story. But when similar situations happen again and again, they become a reason to change legislation. The advocacy team at Voices of Children looks for patterns, analyzes gaps in policies and regulations, and works to improve the system. Alongside traditional advocacy, the Foundation has also been developing artisticadvocacy.

“Even a Storm Can Be Beautiful”: Olena Rozvadovska and Azad Safarov on the Team, Creativity, and the Foundation’s Plans for 2026
Olena and Azad met in the east of Ukraine long before Russia’s full-scale invasion. Back then, he told her: “In five years, we’ll have a Foundation.” She didn’t believe him. Today, the Voices of Children team works across Ukraine, creates books that are later translated by HarperCollins, runs art labs in the mountains, and is preparing to open a large Childhood Center.

Since the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014, violations against Ukrainian children indicate a deliberate policy, rather than unfortunate consequences of the war. With the full-scale invasion, the violations grew in number and spread to the newly occupied territories by Russia.

In February, our centers organized Valentine’s Day events and carefully crafted other meaningful moments with themed sessions and community events. Alongside these activities, we continued to hold support groups for adults and work closely within local communities. During these meetings, parents spoke openly about the realities they are facing—the challenges of parenting during war, deep exhaustion, and ongoing fears for their children.
