What Happens to Ukrainian Children After Returning from Russian Occupation: A Voices of Children Analytical Study

Nearly 600,000 children living in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine attend schools that have been fully converted to the Russian education system (according to the Centre for Civic Education “Almenda”). Overall, as of October 2024, around 1.6 million Ukrainian children aged 0–18 remained in temporarily occupied territories. The Voices of Children Foundation conducted the analytical study “Returning Childhood: Psychological Support for Children on Their Path to Reintegration” to better understand what families face after returning from Russian occupation.

The Voices of Children Foundation welcomed First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska and UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Yvette Cooper to its center in Kyiv. The discussion focused on one of the most painful issues—how to bring children back from the temporarily occupied regions and how to support them after their return. The First Lady emphasized the importance of systematic work: documenting cases, strengthening international cooperation, and providing continued support to families after reunification.

Right at the entrance to the Kyiv History Museum, a boy meets your gaze. Oleh looks straight at you, his expression is deep and serious, not the way nine-year-olds usually do. He was five when Russia’s full-scale invasion began. During the siege of Mariupol, he didn’t step outside for twenty days, until his parents decided they had to break out of the city.

In December, we prepared for St. Nicholas Day, Christmas, and New Year while also completing psychological programs and summing up the results of 2025. Teams at our centers worked with children of different ages, adolescents, parents, and professionals. We combined in-depth psychological support with a festive atmosphere, organizing New Year-themed interactive activities and quests, giving gifts, and sharing moments of joy. We also carried out visits to communities to reach as many families as possible.

The Dutch Raise €885,000 Over the Holidays to Support Ukrainians

In just one week, from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Day, readers of three Dutch newspapers raised nearly €900,000 to support Ukrainians. This year, the amount raised is the largest in the history of the charity initiative, which, for the fourth consecutive year, has been organized by Dutch journalist and volunteer Patrick van ’t Haar. Traditionally, part of the funds will be allocated to programs run by the Voices of Children Foundation, ensuring that children and families across Ukraine have access to professional psychological support.

Specialists from the Voices of Children Charitable Foundation, Nataliia Sosnovenko and Alla Perfetska, held a meeting with case managers and psychologists from partner organizations involved in supporting children who have returned from temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine or the Russian Federation. The meeting took place within the framework of the presidential initiative Bring Kids Back UA.
